Training courses offered at Fallowfield Alpacas
Introduction to Alpacas Workshop
This enjoyable, practical course hosted by Mike and Melanie is aimed at prospective and new alpaca breeders with limited knowledge of alpacas. These informal workshops include a good mixture of classroom learning and hands-on training. The course lasts about 5 hours and includes:
- Introduction to alpacas - presentation and discussion
- Good Ways to get started - agistment, pets, breeding females
- Alpaca Industry prospects
- Fleece characteristics
- Check list for buying alpacas
- Nutrition
- Farm layout, shelter and fencing
- Paddock improvement
- Land care
- Meet the alpacas - hands-on training
- Learning to halter an alpaca
- Teaching them to walk on a lead
- Moving them around the farm
- Holding techniques
- Loading into trailers
Lunch and refreshments during the day are included
- Duration: approx 5 hours 10.30am - 3.30pm
- Course numbers limited to 6 to enable all participants to get maximum benefit from the course
- Cost: £70.00 per head (to include a small alpaca gift)

Husbandry
This course is primarily aimed at those who wish to realise their alpaca dream with the confidence of some hands-on training and also at those new breeders who feel they would benefit from some extra training in a wonderful relaxed atmosphere hosted by Mike and Melanie. A delicious lunch and refreshments throughout the day are included.
This course lasts about 5 hours and includes:
- Presentation and discussion
- Alpaca genotypes - Huacaya and Suri
- Conformation
- Medical care - working with your vet, worming, teeth
- Breeding
- Birthing
- Weaning
- Essential Equipment
- Hands-on experience with toenail trimming, injections, spit-offs, mating
- Halter training
- Handling difficult alpacas
- Skirting fleeces
Lunch and refreshments during the day are included
- Duration: approx 5 hours 10.30 am to 3.30 pm
- Course Numbers limited to 6 to enable all participants to get maximum benefit from the course
- Cost: £70.00 per head (to include a small alpaca gift)

General Course Notes:
As these courses are generally run on consecutive days, there will be a 10% discount for anyone wishing to take both courses. If participants were to subsequently purchase alpacas from Fallowfield Alpacas after attending one of these courses, the cost of the courses would be refunded.
The Introduction to Alpacas Workshop and the Husbandry Course are not suitable for children under 16 years of age. Since these courses are usually run on concurrent days, a 10% discount applies if both days are booked together.
